Three sharks suspected in fatal attack
Police believe more than one shark was responsible for killing a woman at North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane yesterday.
The 21-year-old Brisbane woman died from shock and blood loss after being attacked while swimming with friends near Rainbow Channel.
The woman, whose name has not been released, lost both her arms below the elbow during the attack. She also sustained major wounds to one of her legs.The woman was airlifted to the Princess Alexander Hospital in Brisbane but died shortly after arriving. Inspector Peter Harding says the horrific nature of her injuries indicates up to three sharks were involved and they are searching for them today.
"If we found them I suppose we would try to retrieve them and to see if they could have any body parts I suppose," he said.
"After Friday night's storm, the water was very murky, dirty in fact, so much so that one of the locals over there wouldn't go in diving.
"Some of the locals over there, I think, would not go in that part of the water at any time."
Beaches on North Stradbroke are closed for swimming today. Local Amity Point businessman Miles Scott says the community is shocked the attack happened so close to shore.
"We've never ever seen anything like it before," he said. "We've seen plenty of sharks in the bay, but the whole of Amity Point's just shocked."
He says there are many sharks in the area at this time of year and it was only a matter of time before someone was attacked.
"The amount of sharks we see underneath our crabbing boat when we're out crabbing every day, mate, it'd shock a lot of people," he said.
"But they're a very, very aggressive shark and they don't care what they're attacking. We've had them attack propellers on our outboards and things like that."
